It examines the forces that design exerts in, and on, the world—forces design sets in motion but does not control. Parsons’ Masters in Design Studies program places particular emphasis on four points. We offer information sessions for high school educators looking for more information on the career opportunities that are possible with an education in design. Please explore further information about the program’s four domains, MDes degree requirements, and related courses and faculty. And please join us for our Open House events to learn more about each of the domains and possible trajectories through them.
Students in Dialogue: A Conversation with CoCo Tin
The models are students and a School of Architecture staff member. In Ballroom D. The student showcase, with featured works from students in fashion design, fashion merchandising, fashion styling specializations and the interior design program, is from 6 to 7 p.m. In the John W. Corker Lounge and Ballroom C. The program is free and open to the public. Standing as an elegant white steel and glass pavilion, nestled among trees on the edge of the university campus, the building houses an open-plan arrangement of flexible study spaces across two levels. From the outside, it seems impossibly slender, a thin sketch of a building formed by a rectangular framework of toothpick-thin columns and beams.

The PhD program is the highest degree in the field of design research and scholarship, and is grounded in the production of original and rigorous research. Graduates of the program have demonstrated their leadership in the field of design practice and education in the U.S. and internationally. More broadly, the MDes program will continue investigating the underlying processes shaping contemporary life, while encouraging a more elastic, intellectually generous, and embracing approach to design questions and investigations.
Design Studies Graduate Students
Undergraduate design majors at Carnegie Mellon earn a Bachelor of Design degree (BDes). The degree is equivalent in rank to a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA), but conveys the growing importance of design disciplines as separate and distinct from fine art. UI/UX designers, product designers, environment designers, graphic/communication designers, illustrators, biomedical designers, animators, fashion designers, and artists all housed under one department. One of the remarkable developments in contemporary culture is the convergence of practices that once unambiguously belonged to either creative design or technological experimentation and empiricism, but that today share methods, means, and concerns, in different mediums. Empathy maps give life to the personas in relation to the design. An empathy map is a record of the experience of a person when they encounter a design.
Our programs are founded on a framework that responds to changes in the field of design, but they also seek to shape the future of the discipline and advance the field. Whatever direction you choose in your studies here, our approach prepares you for top jobs in leading companies and organizations today—while teaching you to design with future generations in mind. Distinct from research in the sciences or humanities, design pedagogy involves highly interactive ways of thinking and learning that directly engage the technical, material, spatial, ecological, political, economic, and planetary dimensions of cultural life. Ultimately, MDes at the GSD challenges conventional ways of learning, and achieves a scope and diversity that are unmatched by any other design school in the world. And what did the exercise tell us about the world in which designs operate?
In part, the success of the MDes program has stemmed from its currency; this exciting update expands that rich topicality, amplifying focus on topics like social equity, climate, and housing. Muchori is studying in Italy this semester with the College of Design’s Rome Program. The program offers a unique opportunity for students to learn about contemporary and historic architecture and design while living in Rome. The focus of the MFA degree is on creative performance in design. Its goals are to promote strong and creative conceptual thinking, exploration, interpretation, innovation, and overall excellence in design execution.

We might also shift the frame during the investigation, perhaps we discover the real issues are with "opportunities and capabiliities for retail outlet managers to design inclusive menus in a highly competitive market". The role of framing and reframing in designing has been explored in depth by Kees Dorst in his book "Frame Innovation" (2015). Above all, the MA Design Studies program focuses on the development of articulate, critical voices that can speak to these issues. Students will be prepared to write for the academic context, the design community, and the larger public realm. Working in close proximity to MFA studio programs at Parsons, they also have the opportunity to integrate film, video, and other media into their work.

Situated in contemporary spatial, environmental, and social problems – students will have opportunities to explore and debate and take a position on the spectrum of technology as a tool and a mediator and technology as an intimate human and social interlocutor. Part of what makes design studies so difficult to define is also what makes it exciting. It is particularly valuable when looking across design disciplines to see where there are theoretical or methodological connections and patterns, as well as to look more broadly and deeply at alternative fields of study, like biology, or medicine, or even english, to name a few. It is in these new opportunities that design studies can be invented and reinvented, and used to do the research so critical to advancing the practice of design, or to continue to solve wicked problems in new and innovative ways. Parsons is not currently admitting new students to this master’s degree program.
This is an equally important outcome, and should always be in the minds of designers. Perhaps you have identified a gap between the intentions of the designer, the implementation and the experience. What does this, for example, tell us about the culture of designing (see Guy Julier's book The Culture of Design, 2013). In all design work we should reflect on this, and contribute to Frayling's research type B, research about designing.
It does not seem to have been designed as a coherent system from the user's perspective. This leads to cognitive overload and the potential for dangerous errors. For example, the traction control button is between the two heated seat buttons, and is exactly the same shape. So when reaching down (a long way down) to change the heated seat setting, it is possible to accidentally switch off the traction control. An interesting innovation in this approach is to create personas for non-human agents and systems. For example, if looking at food systems, consider orangutans in the jungle of Borneo and how they are impacted by the use of palm oil in your design.
